The final game in April is upon us and the sun is out in Beloit. We will commute over to Burlington the next three days to take on the surprising 1st place Bees at 2pm Sunday, 6:30 pm Monday and 11am Tuesday. My thanks again to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus for coming on the air last night to talk Cubs and MWL prospects for a couple of innings.
Good to see another former Chief back in the majors as Joe Mather pinch hit for Atlanta last night against the Cardinals, his former team. Joe was a fun guy to be around in 2004 and I’ll never forget this grand slam call that hit a palm tree and came right on cue: Mather Slam
That’s 26 former Chiefs currently in the Majors! 14 position players and 12 pitchers. We could have our own team now, I’ll delve into what starting lineups could look like tomorrow.
April 30 Lineup

Friday Game Notes: April30GameNotes
Well I kinda figured we wouldn’t have a 9-0 road trip but you dont expect to lose games in which the other team has 6 errors. Credit Beloit starter Logan Darnell for pitching around all the mistakes behind him last night. You won’ believe me, but the SUN is out today…and its over 60 degrees! Im not kidding. Great weather, finally for a road game.
The Chiefs turn to lefty Cam Greathouse who has also been burned by errors all season behind him. In three starts he has allowed four unearned runs including three last Saturday against Beloit. Greathouse has gone exactly 4 1/3 innings in each of his three starts so hopefully he pushes past the 5 inning threshold tonight. The bullpen is well rested with nobody throwing more than an inning the last three nights except Juan Serrano last night.
April 29 Lineup
Friday Game Notes: April29GameNotes
Well we made it to Beloit last last night…and were greeted with more rain and cold tempeatures. It erally does feel like football season. The tarp is currently on the field (4:20 pm) and there is a 60% chance of rain. I finished Brad Meltzer’s Inner Circle last night on the bus as we watched the Ice-Cube/Chris Tucker classic Friday…so funny. Good book too, a lot of George Washington/Culper Ring history involving the National Archives and you can tell its the start of a series of books. Started another world thriller today The Emporer’s Tomb by Steve Berry but frankly didn’t read as much as i wanted too cause I spent most the day trying to figure out who the Packers are drafting tonight (I think they trade down, my two cents).
Was great to get the sweep last night and now we are ready to go after Beloit again. An update from last night on starting pitcher Dallas Beeler, it was NOT an arm injury that forced him to leave the game after 3 perfect innings. It appears to be an oblique injury and he is being re-evaluated daily but I would expect him to miss at least 1 if not 2 starts at the minimum.
Day off today for Matt Szczur and Richard Jones. I should note that Matt was finally credited with a hit in the 3rd inning last night to give him 3 hits on the game. I’m sure my incessant on-air complaining had nothing to do with it, but still the right call was finally made.
Thursday Lineup at Beloit
We flip flopped starting ptichers for tonight and tomorrow so we now have this set up:
Thursday April 28 at Beloit LH Graham Hicks (0-1, 1.84) vs. LH Logan Darnell (1-1, 3.86) 6:30 PM
Friday April 29 at Beloit LH Cam Greathouse (0-1, 5.54) vs. RH Adrian Salcedo (0-1, 3.38) 6:30 PM
Saturday April 30 at Beloit RH Hayden Simpson (0-1, 4.32) vs. LH Andrei Lobanov (0-1, 5.68) 2:00 PM
Sunday May 1 at Burlington LH Austin Kirk (2-1, 2.00) vs. RH Josh Bowman (2-0, 3.26) 2:00 PM
Monday May 2 at Burlington RH Robinson Lopez (1-0, 5.29) vs. RH Seth Frankoff (0-1, 11.25) 6:30 PM
Thursday’s game notes: April28GameNotes
The Chiefs go after the sweep tonight in Clinton. We have really good records from 1983-1994 and again from 2002-2010 but the gap between 1994 and 2002 is very shaky at best and non existent in some spots. This much I know: The Chiefs have not had a sweep in Clinton since at least 2000 and their last sweep anywhere against the LKings was July 3-6, 2006 at O’Brien Field. The Chiefs are 3-11-4 in their last 18 series at Alliant Energy Field and 23-44 in this ballpark since the start of the 2002 season.
Peoria did get a 2-game sweep here in 1988 and a 3-game sweep from August 17-19, 1985. I hope to have a clearer answer later as our beat writer Kevin Capie of the Peoria Journal Star goes through their records from 1995-2001. MiLB only has game by game logs online from 2005 to the present, which is also frustrating.
The lineup has a couple of changes. After catching 2 straight days and playing in 5 straight games, the red-hot Micah Gibbs gets a day off, as does Elliot Soto who is hitting .292. Rubi Silva is also out of the lineup after striking out in four of his six at-bats last night
April 27 Lineup
Beeler rhp…followed by Robinson Lopez rhp
Here are today’s game notes with pages for both Dallas Beeler & Robinson Lopez – April27GameNotes
What a win and start to the roadtrip last night as the Chiefs pounded out 13 hits, drew seven walks and scored 14 runs in a 14-3 win. The Chiefs are now over .500 for the first time this season and have their second winning streak of the season. The Chiefs are also 5-5 on the road this season with eight games remaining on the current roadtrip. Peoria needs to take advantage of a 5-13 Clinton team before meeting up with the top two teams in the division record wise on the rest of this roadtrip.
Eric Jokisch, became the fourth pitcher in the last seven seasons to earn his 3rd win of the season before May 1 with a career-best five innings last night. The Virginia, IL native is the subject of this TV piece with Jim Mattson of WEEK TV 25, the NBC affiliate in Peoria.
The Chiefs do get Richard Jones & Rubi Silva back in the lineup tonight. Jones has not played since the April 17 Sunday DH at Wisconsin with an injured ankle and Silva has missed four straight games with a sore hamstring. The Chiefs are without Pierre LePage tonight as his right (throwing) hand was stepped on in last night’s game and is sore today.
April 26 Lineup
Tuesday Game Notes: April26GameNotes Note that Clinton has changed their Wednesday starter as they anticipate a roster move and Seon Gi Kim gets pushed back to Thursday for the LKings.
I hope everyone had a Happy Easter and now we are ready (kind of) to get back to work with a 9-game roadtrip that starts tonight in Clinton. However, and not surprisingly, Mother Nature may have a say in whether or not we play tonight. It is currently (3:45) raining and while the tarp is NOT on the field, Batting Practice has been canceled. We are looking at 100% chance of rain at 5 pm, 65% at 7pm and 30% after that. UGH. Feels like day number 90 in a row with rain or snow. The wet conditions will also keep injured players Richard Jones and Rubi Silva from returning to the lineup tonight. I expect to see them both back in the lineup either tomorrow or Wednesday IF their legs hold up from running today as they test the injuries.
We had a bit of a delayed ride over today as our regular buss driver Russ Stewart is seeing his son Nate off to the Middle East to serve our country and the fill-in was a tad bit late, but we are in Clinton and ready to go. We didn’t watch a movie on the way over as most of the guys slept. I got some work done and started a new book, a thriller, The Inner Circle by Brad Meltzer.
Simpson rhp…followed by Jokisch lhp
Here is my view from the press box at Alliant Energy Field:
Its a beautiful day at the ballpark! The tarp is off the field and we are headed for 66 degrees, sunshine and a doubleheader against Beloit. It will be a very busy day for some at the stadium as the groundscrew and Food & Beverage employees will work a quadruple header since Bradley vs. Evansville was also rained out last night and they will play a double header tonight an hour after our 2nd game ends.
UPDATE: Casey is here now and the lineup stays the same from Friday’s pre-rainout plan
Here are the pitching matchups for the three game series in Clinton that kicks off a nine game road trip.
Monday 6:30 pm – RH Hayden Simpson/LH Eric Jokisch vs. RH George Mieses
Tuesday 6:30 pm – LH Austin Kirk vs. RH Brandon Mauer
Wednesday 6:30 pm – RH Dallas Beeler/RH Robinson Lopez vs. RH Seon Gi Kim (good luck on pronunciation!)
Cam Greathouse and Graham Hicks start today and barring a rain out in Clinton (at least a 60% chance of rain all three nights we are in Clinton) they will throw the 1st two games in Beloit Thursday and Friday respectively, both at 6:30 pm.
Have a Happy Easter and I will post the lineup as soon as it is available!
Saturday DH Game Notes: April23GameNotes
The Friday game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. between the Peoria Chiefs and the Beloit Snappers has been postponed due to rain. The two teams will make up the game in a Saturday double header beginning at Noon, one hour earlier than originally scheduled.
The Easter Egg Hunt originally scheduled for Saturday will be moved to between the two seven-inning games. The Easter Bunny will still make an appearance at O’Brien Field on Saturday during the first home double header of the season. Fans with tickets to Friday’s game can exchange them at the Box Office for any 2011 regular season game based on availability.
The Chiefs will start LH Cam Greathouse (0-0, 6.23) in game one against Beloit LH Logan Darnell (0-1. 4.09). Game two will start 30 minutes after the completion of game one and will feature Chiefs LH Graham Hicks (0-1, 0.90) against Snappers RH Adrian Salcedo (0-1, 4.22). Both games are scheduled for seven innings.
Peoria has already played two double headers in the last week with a split on Sunday in Wisconsin and a sweep of Quad Cities on Wednesday. Beloit has split a pair of double headers on the season, at Quad Cities April 9 and against Cedar Rapids on Sunday. They also had games postponed on Tuesday and Wednesday in Wisconsin that will be made up May 18-19.
Its great to be back home! A nine-game, 10-day road trip finished with yesterday’s shutout sweep of Quad Cities and a 4-5 roadtrip. The Chiefs are now 6-7 ready for this three game series and home stand against 7-4 Beloit (twins). The Snappers have not played since Monday as they were snowed out in Appleton the last two days.
Pitching matchups for the series:
Today: Robinson Lopez (0-0, 6.00) vs. RH BJ Hermsen (1-1, 1.59)
Friday 1pm: LH Cam Greathouse (0-0, 6.23) vs. LH Logan Darnell (0-1, 4.09)
Saturday 1pm: LH Graham Hicks (0-1, 0.90) vs. RH Adrian Salcedo (0-1, 4.22)
Sunday the whole league is off for Easter and Hayden Simpson/Eric Jokisch will pitch Monday night in Clinton
Rubi Silva gets a day off today with a tight hamstring while Richard Jones is still unavailable and Smaily Borges is in Miami on a personal matter.
Here are today’s game notes: April21GameNotes
And here are new Flood photos from yesterday:
This place really is an island…Field looks in decent shape though and we are ready for a double header today. Chiefs made their first roster move as we added catcher/1st baseman Chad Noble from Daytona and Marcus Hatley landed on the DL and he will meet with the doctors again tomorrow. Full story.
Today’s game 1 lineup
Kirk LHP….Dallas Beeler will start game 2 pushing Robinson Lopez to Thursday at home.
Wednesday Game Notes froze my computer on 4 consecutive tries, so I gave up trying to upload them, sorry.
