Meet RHP Cory Jones

*As March approaches we are going to use this blog space to introduce you to potential 2013 Peoria Chiefs players. We do not have any inside information on our roster and nothing will be official until the end of March. But with the affiliation change it is time to get familiar with some faces and names that we could see on the diamond in Peoria this summer, if not opening day then sometime during 2013. Over the next few weeks we’ll take a look at 2012 and 2011 draftees plus foreign born players who excelled in Batavia, Johnson City and GCL Cardinals in 2012.*

Acquired: Drafted in 5th round (180th overall) in 2012

School: College of the Canyons

 Professional Career

  • Made his pro debut for Johnson City on June 24, 2012 with three shutout innings and five strikeouts in Bluefield
  • Made five starts going 0-2 with a 7.27 ERA in the Appalachian League
  • Struck out 15 and walked 11 in 17 1/3 innings
  • Allowed three earned runs or less in each of his first four starts before allowing eight runs on seven hits in just one inning on July 22 in his final start of the season
  • Held lefties to a .154 average on the season.

 College

  • At the College of the Canyons in 2012 went 7-0 with a 2.64 ERA
  • Struck out 89 and walked 38 in 61 1/3 innings of work
  • Struck out 10 over eight innings on February 25 at Orange Coast College which included 2012 Chiefs OF Bijan Rademacher
  • Struck out 10 again on April 16 at Citrus in a six innings win
  • Struck out a career-high 15 on April 24 at West LA in eight innings
  • Struck out 11 in his final start on May 1 in a no-decision at Santa Barbara
  • Gave up three earned runs or less in 10 of his 11 starts
  • Led the Western State Conference South Division in strikeouts and least hits allowed
  • Highest drafted College of the Canyons player since 1986
  • Among the College of the Canyons alums to make it to the Major Leagues are Dana Eveland, Bobby Hughes and Bob Walk
  • Signed to transfer to Oregon State University before signing with the Cardinals.
  • 2011: Started six games for College of the Canyons with a 2.47 ERA
  • Struck out 43 batters in 40 innings
  • Missed the last month of the season with a right bicep injury
  • 2010: Began his college career at Pepperdine in 2010 going 0-1 with a 19.29 ERA and six strikeouts
  • Pitched eight times for the Waves as a freshman totaling seven innings.

High School 

  • Played at Simi Valley High School in California
  • Graduated in 2009 after playing two varsity seasons
  • Helped Simi Valley to two Marmonte League Championships and CIF Southern Section titles
  • Also named MVP of the basketball team as a freshman
  • Simi Valley HS graduated Jeff and Jered Weaver, cormer Cardinals catcher Bryan Anderson, former MLB pitcher Scott Radinsky and former NBA player Don Maclean.
