Meet Yoenny Gonzalez

*As March approaches we are going to use this blog space to introduce you to potential 2013 Peoria Chiefs players. We do not have any inside information on our roster and nothing will be official until the end of March. But with the affiliation change it is time to get familiar with some faces and names that we could see on the diamond in Peoria this summer, if not opening day then sometime during 2013. Over the next few weeks we’ll take a look at 2012 and 2011 draftees plus foreign born players who excelled in Batavia, Johnson City and GCL Cardinals in 2012.*

So far you have met Patrick WisdomSteve BeanCarson KellyTim CooneyAlex MejiaCory Jones and Kurt Heyer. Today we introduce you to eighth round pick Yoenny Gonzalez. *Note we skipped over 7th rounder RHP Kyle Barraclough who finished the 2012 season with 11 appearances for Quad Cities racking up two saves in 18 innings between July 21 & August 24.

Acquired: Drafted in 8th round (270th overall) in 2012 

School: Central Florida Junior College

Professional:

  • Made his pro debut for the Gulf Coast League Cardinals on June 18 and was 1-for-4
  • Hit .227 with six RBI and four doubles in 41 games for the GCL Cardinals
  • Scored 22 runs and drew 13 walks…
  • Stole 13 bases in 17 attempts
  • Committed just three errors in 40 outfield starts while playing all three OF positions
  • Had four outfield assists…Hit .262 in July with four RBI and 13 runs scored in 20 games
  • Collected a double on June 21
  • Had his first multi-hit game on July 11 with two singles
  • Drove in two runs on July 17 vs. the GCL Astros
  • Went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI on August 8
  • Had a 5-game hit streak from July 6-12 and again from July 30 – August 8
  • Switch-hitter batted .260 vs. RHP and .107 vs. LHP
  • All four doubles and five of his six RBI came against RHP
  • Ranked by Baseball America as the fastest runner in the Cardinals 2012 draft class and as the Cardinals 7th best centerfielder heading into the 2013 seasons

  • Played at College of Central Florida in Ocala, FL
  • Hit .317 with seven homers, seven doubles, three triples and 14 stolen bases in 2012 while leading CF back to the post-season after a two-year absence
  • Drove in 44 runs in 167 at-bats with an OBP of .377
  • He is the 2nd highest player ever drafted out of CF after Kevin Ponder, a 7th round Mets draftee in 1986
  • Ran a 6.3 60-yard dash in the predraft workout

High School:

  • Played at Coral Gables High School in Miami
  • Mike Lowell, Yonder Alonso and Eli Marrero all made the Major Leagues from Coral Gables HS
  • other notable alumni include NFL players Frank Gore, Jonathan Vilma and Al Del Greco and former US Attorney General Janet Reno
