Chiefs Chatter #6 – Get to Know Mike Mayers

As Spring Training approaches we are going to use this blog space to introduce you to potential 2014 Peoria Chiefs players. We do not have any inside information on our roster and nothing will be official until the end of March. But with spring training on the way it is time to get familiar with some faces and names that we could see on the diamond in Peoria this summer. Over the next few weeks we’ll take a look at 2012 and 2013 draftees plus foreign born players who excelled in State College, Johnson City and GCL Cardinals in 2013 plus some possible players returning to Peoria. Today catch up with Mike Mayers who pitched with the Chiefs last August. Start with an interview from Tuesday with Mike who is working out in Oxford, Mississippi (Apologies for the first part of his first answer getting cut off)

  • Will report to Spring Training early as part of the Cardinals STEP camp
  • Ranked by Baseball America as the Cardinals #7 Right-Handed Starting Pitcher


  • Made five starts in a Chiefs uniform to end the season going 0-3 with a 3.70 ERA
  • Struck out 14 batters and walked five in 24 1/3 Midwest League innings
  • Made his Chiefs debut on August 4 with one run allowed on five hits over 4 2/3 innings against Burlington
  • Threw six shutout innings on August 10 at Clinton and left with a 1-0 lead but took a no-decision as the Chiefs lost
  • Allowed three earned runs in each of his final three starts, all home losses
  • Struck out five against Burlington on August 23 over six innings
  • Appeared in five games for the GCL Cardinals going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in three starts
  • Struck out 13 and walked six in 12 innings pitched
  • Picked up his first win against the GCL Mets on July 2, pitching two innings and surrendering a run in his pro debut
  • Pitched seven scoreless innings between July 4 and July 23
  • Opponents went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and two outs
  • Pitched three innings in his final start on July 29, giving up one run on two hits and one walk while fanning four

  • Pitched three years for Ole Miss
  • In 2013 he went 5-6 with a 2.83 ERA as a junior
  • Struck out 73 and walked 37 in 92 1/3 innings and held opponents to a .227 average
  • Threw seven innings of scoreless relief against No. 13 Mississippi State to earn SEC  pitcher of the week honors..
  • In the summer of 2012 he struck out 42 batters and walked just seven for the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod League where he was ranked the #17 prospect
  • In 2012 he posted a 6-3 record with a 3.50 ERA in 92.2 innings of work
  • Picked up the win against No. 8 Texas A&M to advance to the finals of the Texas A&M Regional and then pitched against TCU out of the bullpen in the Regional Championship game
  • Beat No.1 Kentucky on April 7
  • Shut out CWS semifinalist Arkansas twice, including once in an elimination game at the SEC Tournament
  • Held opponents to a .222 batting average
  • In 2011 Mayers made 20 appearances with 19 of them coming out of the bullpen
  • He posted a 1-0 record with a 5.10 ERA while recording a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio
  • First Rebel drafted by the Cardinals since Scott Bittle in the fourth round in 2009
  • Current Cardinals hurler Lance Lynn was drafted out of Ole Miss in the supplemental first round in 2008.

  • Lettered in each of his three years at Grove City High School and earned an All-Ohio selection in 2009
  • Was a two-time All District selection (2009, 2010) and three-time All-League
  • Posted an 18-6 record with two saves accompanied by a 2.10 ERA with 151 strikeouts..
  • Mayers also hit .338 for his career with 21 RBI
  • Played in the 2010 All-Ohio Mizuno Game
  • Was a multi-sport athlete and lettered three years in basketball and two years in football
  • Rated No. 188 out of Baseball America’s top 500 prospects in the 2013 draft
  • Notable alumni from Grove City High School include 90’s NFL player Derrick Alexander
