Hello from Cedar Rapids with Game Notes & More
After winning the series yesterday in Beloit in a wild 14-10 game, the longest game of the season, we made it into Cedar Rapids about 8pm. The Kernels and Kane County were playing a double header as we dropped off laundry at Perfect Game Field before heading to dinner and the hotel. Hope you saw the profile of Steve Bean last night on Peoria’s NBC affiliate, WEEK-TV 25. If not here it is, a great piece from Lee Hall.
The Chiefs swept Cedar Rapids last week at Dozer Park but all three games were close with the Chiefs winning 5-3, 4-1 and 2-0. All three games were well-pitched with the Chiefs getting clutch RBI from Jake Stone (double in the 5-3 win) and Steve Bean (RBI FC in 2-0 win). The series matches up this way on the mound:
We saw Slegers (5.2ip, 5h, 3r, 3bb, 5k, ND) in the 5-3 win April 21 at home. Carson Kelly had a triple against Slegers and the other four hits were singles. We also faced Eades (5.2ip, 6h, 3r, 2er, 2bb, 5k, Loss) in the 4-1 win as Nick Petree outpitched him April 22. Eades was a teammate of Mason Katz at LSU the last three seasons.
Here are today’s Game Notes. The recap from yesterday was too long to include the opposing starter paragraph, so here is the bio on Kernels starter Felix Jorge so we will face tonight.
Opposing Starter: RHP Felix Jorge makes his sixth appearance of the season and fifth start tonight for Cedar Rapids. Jorge got his second win of the 2014 season in his last start against Clinton on April 26. Jorge gave up two runs on five hits in six innings pitched, striking out five, and walking one. Last year, Jorge made 12 starts for the Elizabethan Twins, in which he went 2-2 with a 2.95 ERA, recorded 72 strikeouts, and 18 walks in 61 innings pitched. In 2012, Jorge made 12 appearances, seven starts, for the GCL Twins. Jorge went 0-3 with a 2.34 ERA, 37 strikeouts, and 12 walks in 34 2/3 innings. Jorge was signed as an international free agent in 2011. In 2011, Jorge made nine appearances for the DSL Twins, recording a record of 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA. Jorge made two starts against Johnson City in 2013. Total, Jorge went 0-1, giving up eight runs, five earned, struck out seven, and walked two in 12 innings of work. Current Chiefs Faced: Kenny Peoples-Walls (0-6), Steve Bean (2-6, 2 r).
