Interviews from the Cardinals Caravan

Last Friday we hosted the Cardinals Caravan and you can catch up with all the local media from the event in Monday’s post. During the Caravan I caught up with 2000 Chiefs manager Tom Lawless and Cardinals 2014 1st round pick Luke Weaver. Here’s the audio from those interviews

Cardinals Caravan Recap

The Cardinals Caravan came through Peoria last weekend and over the next couple of days I’ll have interviews, photos and behind the scenes info. Carlos Martinez, Luke Weaver, Mitch Harris, Michael Ohlman, Andy Benes, Tom Lawless and Mike Claiborne comprised our 2016 Caravan stop.

Harris Interviews

Mitch Harris interviewed by Peoria Media

Let’s start with a general primer and a feature story on former Navy Lieutenant Mitch Harris from the Peoria Journal Star, in the Pekin Times and also in the Bloomington Pantagraph. Harris was quite the popular interview Friday night with the local media and he received a very richly deserved standing ovation from the capacity crowd at the Embassy Suites for his Naval service.

WMBD Channel 31 came out and got some great video of the event along with interviews. You can see Dan Molloy’s report here.

Martinez

Carlos Martinez was also a popular interview as he talked through interpreter Tony Ferreira of the Cardinals front office staff. Martinez was the feature subject in this Bloomington Pantagraph article about his offseason shoulder recovery.

Check back later in the week for some audio interviews from the Caravan plus photos from our visit to the Children’s Hospital of Illinois!

Interview with Jimmy Reed

The 2014 Chiefs player interviews continue today with LHP Jimmy Reed. In case you missed any of the earlier posts, catch interviews with Rob Kaminsky, Carson Kelly and Mason Katz. Chris Perry will be up next!

Reed, a 2013 6th round pick out of Maryland, made 13 starts for the Chiefs between Opening Day and June 20. The lefty posted a 3-3 record and a 3.88 ERA while striking out 62 batters and walking just 18 in 72 innings of work. In his final eight starts in the MWL he allowed three ER or less in all eight and posted an ERA of 2.05 in June. With Palm Beach, Reed was 6-2 with a 3.58 ERA in nine starts and he struck out 35 and walked just seven in 55 1/3 FSL innings. He also went to Double-A Springfield for two starts, beating Tulsa July 28 and losing to Arkansas August 3. Overall for 2014 he was 10-6 with a 3.84 ERA in 24 starts with 103k/28bb in 138 1/3 innings.

Talking Prospects with Jim Callis

Again this off-season I was fortunate to chat with Jim Callis from MLBPipeline.com and a senior write with MLB.com. Make sure you follow Jim on twitter for all the latest prospect news and notes! For roughly 20 minutes on Wednesday Jim and I chatted about the Cardinals prospects, former Chiefs and even hit on a few potential 2015 Chiefs. After the interview you’ll find an article from Thursday on Alex Reyes and some video of Jim and Jonathan Mayo chatting about Reyes and Marco Gonzales. My thanks to Jim for his time and I hope you enjoy our chat!

If the video won’t play off the embed, here is the link.

And here is Jim’s article on Reyes. Be sure to check out where he ranks on the Cardinals list when it is released in March!

Prospecting News…and Links.

Enjoyed watching the MLB Network and MLB.com “Pipeline” show last night revealing the Top 50 prospects. Overall MLB.com ranked 100 prospects and the Cardinals collected six spots including Oscar Tavares at #3 and Shelby Miller at #25.

Chiefs fans will see familiar names at #16 (Javier Baez), #42 (Jorge Soler), #46 (Chris Archer) and #56 (Hak-Ju Lee).

The Midwest League was well represented as well with 11 players who spent time in the league in 2012 including Miguel Sano at #12, Francisco Lindor at #14, Baez at #16 and Archie Bradley at #24 in the top 25.

  • Friend of the blog and former Chief Anthony Giansanti (@Giansanity) was profiled this week by Jessica Quiroli of High Heels on the Field. Give it a read and catch up with G.
  • The Cardinals announced 16 players who have received Non-Roster Invitations to Spring Training including Oscar Tavares, Kolten Wong and Michael Wacha. The only player on this list that could be ticketed for Peoria in 2013 is catcher Jesus Montero who played 10 games for Quad Cities in 2012 and spent most of the season in Batavia.
  • The Cardinals also released the names of players invited to a special Minor League camp. This list has a bunch of potential Chiefs for this season including 2012 draftees Patrick Wisdom, Steve Bean, Carson Kelly and Tim Cooney. Other potential Chiefs including pitchers Victor De Leon, Lee Stoppelman and Tyrell Jenkins along with outfielders CJ McElroy and Charlie Tilson.
  • It’s a week old but here is MILB.com’s list of Minor League players on provisional rosters for the World Baseball Classic which starts in March. The list includes former Chiefs Ryan Searle (Australia) and Yao-Lin Wang (Chinese Taipei). Hung-Wen Chen was also named to the Chinese Taipei roster but is not currently on a MiLB roster having been released by the Cubs last season.
