An Interview with Mason Katz

Today our interview series continues as I chat with 2014 Chiefs infielder Mason Katz. If you missed the first two parts of the series take a listen to interviews with Rob Kaminsky and Carson Kelly. Up next this week are Jimmy Reed, Chris Perry and Alex Reyes.

Katz played in 75 games for the Chiefs in 2014 and led the team in home runs with 14. He had a team-high 43 RBI and 26 extra-base hits at the time of his July 1 promotion to Palm Beach. Katz hit .212 with 29 walks and a .432 slugging percentage in Peoria while starting 49 games at second base and 27 at first base. As you’ll hear in the interview, there is a new position in the works for Mason in 2015. A fourth round pick out of LSU in 2013, Kats hit six homers and drove in 28 more runs in Palm Beach. In 49 games in the Florida State League he batted .276 and slugged .442.

Here is my phone interview with Mason Katz:

Wednesday Lineup, Game Notes & Interview

Pretty quick bus ride last night. Russ can really put it down and get us from point A to point B better than any bus driver I’ve been with. I didn’t get any reading done as Casey put in 2012 which was much more enjoyable than I had expected so I watched it. John Cusack was very good. Then we watched the first 30 minutes of Office Space and you can never pass that up!

The hotel at Cedar Rapids is by far the best of the three we have been to this season and the Coopers Mill restaurant on the ground floor is finally back in business after the tragic 2008 floods that ravaged downtown Cedar Rapids. And that’s super good news cause there are no other places to eat near the hotel and they stay open til after midnight so we can get dinner after the game.

This could be quite the series…Cedar Rapids just allowed 5 runs in 3 games total at Quad Cities…and got swept 1-0, 2-1 and 2-0. They have scored 14 runs in 6 games this season, have not homered and are batting .223. The Chiefs of course have their own problems offensively batting .210 as a team with 14 runs scored in 6 games and one homer. Cedar Rapids leads the MWL with a 1.84 team ERA and 56 strikeouts while the Chiefs staff has a 3.18 ERA and 51 strikeouts.

You can read more about him in game notes but tonight’s starter for Cedar Rapids, Fabio Martinez is the Angels #6 prospect. He struck out 11 Beloit Snappers in 5 innings on Friday, throws 94-96 fastball and has the best slider in the Angels system. Yikes!
