Spring Training Update: Former Chiefs with the Cardinals

Hey Chiefs fans,

Only eight games remain on the St. Louis Cardinals spring training schedule. The Cardinals are now 12–10 in the spring and had a good week logging a 5–2 record since we were first checked in here on Playing in Peoria. Now let’s find out how former Chiefs players are doing after a week has gone by. Stats in this post were last updated on March 19, 2018.

Harrison Bader- As a part of a loaded Cardinals outfield, Bader is hitting .273 and has driven in three RBI. Bader is tied for second on the club in runs scored with eight.

Dylan Carlson — The Chiefs outfielder for all of 2017, made his spring debut over the weekend going 1-for-2 with a double.

Paul DeJong- After finishing second in the 2017 National League Rooking of the Year voting and fresh off a new contract, DeJong is batting .240 with two home runs and five RBI this spring.

Tommy Edman- The Stanford product has two hits in six at-bats during spring training 2018.

Jack Flaherty- He made a five-inning start last week and lowered his ERA to 4.85 through a total 13 innings of work. Over that span, Flaherty surrendered seven runs on nine hits while racking up a team high 20 strikeouts.

Austin Gomber- The lefty did not pitch last week but over the spring, owns a 1–0 record during three appearances. Gomber carries a 2.57 ERA in seven innings on the hill while letting up two runs on six hits while collecting three strikeouts.

Derian Gonzalez- Currently sporting a 0.00 ERA through four appearances, Gonzalez has only surrendered two hits in 4 1/3 innings of work with three strikeouts.

Ryan Helsley- In three appearances, he has a1–0 record along with a 7.71 ERA after 4 2/3 innings on the bump. Helsley has given up four runs on seven hits and set down two batters via the punch-out.

Jordan Hicks- The 2017 Peoria Chiefs hurler struck out two batters in his one shutout inning out of the bullpen.

Carson Kelly- Kelly has three hits in 30 at-bats with two RBI in 12 games.

Andrew Knizner- Another 2017 member of the Chiefs, Knizner belted two long balls with three RBI in 17 games, behind a .208 average.

Josh Lucas- After making his MLB debut last season, Lucas has a spotless 0.00 ERA through 9 1/3 innings to pair with a 1–0 record. In his outing last week he fanned three batters. Through five games, Lucas surrendered four hits but has struck out 12 batters while just walking two.

Mike Mayers- Here’s another pitcher who owns a flawless 0.00 ERA this spring. Mayers tossed nine innings in four games, including a two inning performance last week and has given up five hits and struck out 10 batters compared to zero walks.

Alex Mejia- In 19 games, Mejia carries a .154 average with two RBI.

Oscar Mercado- The speedy Mercado is second in the Cardinals camp in steals with five only trailing Kolten Wong who has nabbed six bases thus far. At the plate, Mercado has a .172 average with two RBI in 29 at-bats.

Yadier Molina- The face of the franchise blasted two homers last week to boost his numbers to a .297 average with three long balls and nine RBI over 14 games this spring plus a .990 OPS.

Jason Motte- After moving on for a few years, Motte returns to the Cardinals camp trying to make another good impression. After five appearances and a little over 4 1/3innings on the mound, Motte has a 10.38 ERA with six strikeouts.

Dennis Ortega- After playing last season in Peoria, Ortega has one hit in his two bats along with two walks at the dish.

Daniel Poncedeleon- The right hander has gone through a lot to return to the mound. In three innings on the bump, he has a 15.00 ERA surrendering five runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Arturo Reyes- Reyes has made only one appearance this spring letting in two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Reyes recorded two strikeouts in the short outing.

Edmundo Sosa- The shortstop is making the most of his 16 at-bats by recording seven hits for a .438 average. Sosa has 2 RBI in addition to a .938 OPS.

Sam Tuivailala- Another former Chiefs pitcher who owns a 0.00 ERA. Tuivailala has made six appearances, letting up four hits in 5 1/3 innings including a save. The right hander has set down 12 batters via the K.

Breyvic Valera- The 2013 Peoria Chiefs infielder is batting .160 in 25 at-bats with two RBI.

Patrick Wisdom- Another 2013 Chiefs infielder, Wisdom is hitting .143 with an RBI in 22 games while drawing four walks.

Jake Woodford- Three scoreless innings has been the story for Woodford this spring including two strikeouts.

Andy Young — The 2017 Chiefs infielder and MWL All-Star made his spring debut this weekend and was 0-for-1.
